Exhibition Statement
What does it mean to hold onto loss? How do we talk about—or avoid—death and the afterlife?
Here and After is a collaborative exhibition by Matel Rokke and Hannah Demma, exploring themes of grief, memory, and the unknown. Through handmade paper, deep cyanotypes, layered drawings, and mixed-media sculptures, they create a visual dialogue reflecting the complex, shifting nature of loss.
This body of work was created through an ongoing exchange between the two artists, layering materials and ideas in response to one another—mirroring the way grief moves through us in waves, shaping and reshaping our understanding of absence. Fragile yet enduring, these works invite viewers to engage, reflect, and consider their own relationships with memory and loss.
Here and After opens on First Friday, April 4, 2025, at Petshop Gallery in Benson and remains on view through May 24, 2025.

PLAY/BOOK

Sketchbooks are a common practice among artists across a multitude of mediums, and have been used to troubleshoot ideas for more developed works of art, practice their skills, and work their creative muscles. Sketchbooks celebrate curiosity and discovery and can serve as a learning tool for beginner artists learning to bring their creativity into reality.
For some artists, sketchbooks are a diary. They symbolize a safe space to try new ways of artistic expression or a careful discipline to refine drawing skills and expand artistic endurance. This low-expectation medium can foster great ideas and assist in the next finished and fully developed work of art.
Art enthusiasts and artists themselves tend to overlook the contents of their own sketchbooks, whereas friends and art supporters are curious about what’s inside. The purpose of this show is to bring the sketchbook practice into the public eye, in order to embrace the messy and disorganized, and show the work behind the final pieces of art.
This show celebrates sketchbooks as a part of an artist’s studio practice and brings the full scope of the creative process to light.
