Madonnari Street Mural Workshop

Madonnari Street Mural Workshop

August 2, 2024

Military Ave. Benson Creative District. Omaha, NE

This year, the New American Arts Festival proudly presents the Madonnari Street Mural & Workshop in the heart of Benson. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to participate in a vibrant tradition that blends contemporary artistry with rich historical roots.

About Madonnari Art:

Originating in Italy during the 16th century, Madonnari art was created by vagabond artists who traveled from town to town, bringing to life religious images on pavements and squares. These artists, named after their practice of depicting the Madonna, used chalk, brick, charcoal, and colored stones to create their ephemeral masterpieces.

Modern Chalk Festivals:

Today, this art form has evolved and gained popularity worldwide. Festivals such as the Denver Chalk Art Festival and Italy’s Festival Bella Via showcase incredible talent and bring communities together. These events are celebrated for their creativity, allowing artists to perfect their craft and spectators to witness the creation of stunning street art.

Workshop Details:

The Madonnari Street Mural workshop will be led by renowned artists Rosa Nelson and Oria Simonini. Throughout the festival, participants will learn about the techniques and history of Madonnari art and contribute to a communal street mural using pastels and chalks.
